    Update from case Detective: Regarding the murder trial for retired SLMPD Sergeant Ralph Harper. At 1:00pm this afternoon (9/18/23), the defendant pled guilty to Murder 2nd Degree, Robbery 1st Degree and two counts of Armed Criminal Action. As part of a plea agreement with the State, he was sentenced to 20 years on the Murder 2nd Degree charge, 15 years on the Robbery 1st Degree charge and 6 years on the two Armed Criminal Action charges with the terms to be run concurrently. The Harper family was present in the courtroom and heard the defendant admit his responsibility in the fatal shooting. They are thankful for the support from the SLMPD and are relieved to finally have a conclusion to this tragic incident.

    Jury finds Facundo Chavez guilty of shooting, killing Deputy Peter Herrera

    A jury found Facundo Chavez guilty of capital murder for the killing of El Paso County Sheriff's Deputy Peter Herrera. The jury deliberated for about 40 minutes after hearing closing arguments Thursday morning. Chavez shot and killed Herrera during a traffic stop in San Elizario on March 22, 2019. His sentencing will be on Friday at 9 a.m.
